Hello there,
Well! It was a real privilege just to be asked to be involved with something like this - but to have my name attached to it is fantastic! I really do feel very proud indeed. I'm involved with the NSPCC where I now live in the South West, and that's a passion that stems at least partly from my own childhood. It's wonderful to think that my life since then - and in some way, my books - could help make some sort of positive difference to other women.
Some of you might already know that my life hasn't always exactly been a bed of roses. I had lots of lives before the one I now love so much. I was three years old when my mother died, and, with my father away at sea, it wasn't until some time later that a neighbour saw me and my brother playing outside and realised something was wrong. Then it was off to a series of horrible orphanages, followed by adoption and later, a string of difficult relationships, grim flats and all sorts of careers. I started quite late as a writer, and my experiences inevitably find their way into my novels. But I genuinely wouldn't complain about anything that life has brought me. I've met some amazing people and I truly believe that adversity brings out the best in us. I've seen it again and again.
I suppose the main reason I'm so thrilled to be involved with this award is that whether they win the prizes or not, the nomination itself will mean so much to someone. You simply can't have too many opportunities to tell a friend or a loved one that you think they are - or something they've done is - something special. And it's true, sometimes you do need more than words (sounds great, doesn't it - coming from an author!). Simply by registering a nomination you are bringing somebody to wider recognition - and I can't imagine anyone not being moved by that.
So, thank you for your interest in the Lesley Pearse Women of Courage Award. I hope it allows you to tell someone how much you admire them - and I really look forward to hearing more about you and whoever you choose to nominate.
Lots of love,
